Meet Christie

tireCan you tell us a little about yourself (name, age, occupation, and children)?
Christie Nix Born 1981 so that makes me 31 yrs old.
Full time Army wife and mom, part time personal trainer. 2 girls and baby boy due ANY DAY NOW!

What sparked your interest in training?
Being an athlete all my life and through college (soccer player) I always had a training tempo. After marriage it was something I still did for me and found pleasure in. After kids it was mostly to lose the baby weight but once my second was 2 it became more than that. Someone told me about figure competitions and I dived in, haven’t been the same since.

How would you describe your body before you began training?
Well it’s fluctuated, lol!  But I’d say the biggest change is from a usually thin frame (skinny fat from excessive running) to wanting to add muscle to compete, strong is the new skinny for me!!

Please describe a “typical” day for you?  What is your daily routine like?
We get up around 6:30 and get ready for the day, girls off to school and me off to work, with my protein coffee in a mug and oatmeal in a dixie cup. I train my clients for the day and usually have just enough time for my own training. Once the girls get home it’s full time mama mode with homework, chores, laundry, sports, dinner, errands, and get ready to do it all again the next day.

What is your currently weekly training routine?
Well during this pregnancy it’s evolved but my typical training consists of a 5 day split. Monday starts with legs then Tuesday shoulders, chest and back, arms and core, and Fridays another leg day focusing more on Glutes. I add core and cardio in when my schedule permits. Love core training that feels like cardio and HIIT sprints at least once a week.

What is your favorite cardio or weights?strong
Weights!  I can get my cardio by lifting faster 😉

Do you have a favorite body part to train?  What exercise do you like to use for it?
I’d say Glutes, I love dead lifts of all sorts but nothing more than the traditional RDL.

What does your diet consist of on a daily basis?
Protein!!  I always make sure to have cooked proteins for the day and add my veggies and complex carbs. If I’m out of prepped food I usually turn to tuna or a chicken salad.  Lately I’ve been loving homemade salads with all sorts of toppings.

Do you have a favorite healthy meal/food?  Do you have a favorite cheat meal/food?  What are they?

Healthy meal would have to be steak fajitas with lots of veggies, low carb tortillas, and Greek yogurt for sour cream.
Favorite food is hands down French fries.

How do you deal with cravings?
The best way for me personally to deal with cravings is the ability to have a cheat meal once a week. It keeps me focused through out the week and teaches me the discipline of knowing how to say no when I’d rather have something else on my scheduled cheat meal. I keep junk out of the house, if we want ice cream or something else we got out for it and it never comes home. Keeps me out of the kitchen looking at something I know I SHOULDN’T have.

What is your favorite workout song?
Ugh. That’s so hard, I have SO MANY!  Love all types of music when I train but nothing motivates me more than Praise and Worship, Forever Reign by Hillsong always does the trick.

What, if any, supplements do you take?
USANA vitamins, fish oils and protein powder are my three staples. I also use BCAA’s when I’m not pregnant or nursing, I’ve used Glutamine and pre workouts at times.

What attracts you the most about bodybuilding competitions?
Well I’d like to say building the perfect physic but I know that’s in the eye of the beholder. For me it’s the idea of always striving to be better than I was before, learning as I go, and getting stronger with each season.award

What keeps you motivated on tough days?
I always say just show up…..if you can just take yourself to the gym, routine and habit kick in and my tough day gets turned around. As far as diet goes that’s more of a struggle for me. When I stay busy I usually have to eat on the go and I don’t really feel like I’m missing anything. However because of that I menu plan on Sundays.

What are you most proud of?
My family will always be what I’m most proud of!  Being a military family is fun for sure but adds a variety of challenges. We know Home is where we are together!  The little moments are the most special!  And have a respect for the word sacrifice most don’t have to face.

What tips do you have for a beginner just starting out in the industry?
Make a plan!!  A plan for healthy foods you like to cook and eat, a weekly menu, a training plan, and schedule to make all that happen. If necessary a trainer and diet coach to make the plan for you, you just have to do it!  If you decide to compete great, if not it doesn’t mean your goals are less serious. Also make sure that plan acknowledges that this has to be a new lifestyle, not a goal with a completion date and then back to your old ways. And remember everyone started somewhere and it took time, perseverance will take you a long way, stay committed!

What words of encouragement can you offer to women who believe this is a sport for only women without kids?
It’s totally not!!  Most of the women I meet (and the ones I know that have won competitions) all have kids!  I was more serious about my training and nutrition once I became a mom, the athlete in me didn’t have to go away because I’ve breast feed and clean up toys most of the day.

What is next for you?  What goals do you have in mind?  journey
Before this pregnancy I was on a mission to make some gains in my shoulders and Glutes before I compete again, and hire a diet coach. I still plan to do that and get my figure back all at the same time. My body isn’t what it was before the pregnancy obviously but the knowledge and experience is still there.  First I’m focused on getting back into my pre-pregnancy clothes and once I feel ready pick a competition and make my return!

It’s been a pleasure!  Do you have any final words or a favorite quote to share with the readers of NaFiMo
Find your own journey don’t mimic someone else’s.  We all enjoy different types of training, looks, have different body types, schedules, and goals. Decide what you want to accomplish and do it as the best version of YOU there is.
